Znanstveniki so odkrili razlog, zakaj so meteoriti, ki pristanejo na Zemlji, drugačne barve kot asteroidi v vesolju.
Ekipa raziskovalcev pod vodstvom Richarda Binzla z Inštituta za tehnologijo Massachusetts (MIT) je s pomočjo infrardečega teleskopa opazovala barvo asteriodov v vesolju in podatke primerjala s podatki o meteoritih (delčkih asteroidov, ki so pristali na Zemlji). Predhodne raziskave so namreč pokazale, da vpliv Sonca pordeči površino asteroidov.

Takšni so, ker solarni veter poškoduje minerale, ki se nato obarvajo rdeče, podobno kot sončne opekline. “Ko pa preučujemo barvo meteoritov, je ta zelo nenavadna, saj v večini primerov ni enaka kot pri asteroidih,” je dejal Binzel. Astronom Clark Chapman z jugozahodnega raziskovalnega inštituta v Koloradu, ki ni del raziskovalne ekipe, pa je v reviji Nature pojasnil, zakaj je tako. “Ko se asteroidi približajo Zemlji, ta na asteroidih povzroči potrese, kar je dovolj, da se drobno kamenje premeša in tako površje spremeni barvo.” Na površju se tako znajde kamenje, ki prej ni bilo izpostavljeno solarnemu vetru in ni poškodovano, zato je tudi drugačne barve.
